Notes for Dominique COCO, SR

The marriage record of Dominique Baldony and Elizabeth Rabalais was
signed "Dominique Coco". This name change was continued with this family
in all records and documents thereafter. Their marriage record revealed
that Dominque Baldony was a native of "Nice en Provence", a region under
the control of the Princes of Savoy; hence, he was a native of Italy.
The circumstances of his arrival in Louisiana and Avoyelles is not
known. A family legend which cannot be verified contends that he
accompanied Marquuis de Lafayette to America. He was not listed among
the passengers aboard the La Victoire on its trip from Bordeaux, France
in 1777. Since crew members were not listed on the passenger list, there
remains some possibility. LaVictoire was wrecked and sunk in the harbor
at Charleston, South Carolina as it was preparing for the return voyage
to France in June, 1777. His name was not found among French soldiers
nor sailors participating in the Revolutionary War.

A local legend in Marksville indicated that he operated a fruit or
grocery business in which coconuts were offered for sale. It was
suggested that the name change resulted from this business.
