Notes for Jean Baptiste RABALAIS, I

Jean Baptiste Rabalais, I. and Marie Louise Bouchard moved from Pointe
Coupee and settled in Avoyelles after their marriage. This was about the
time Joseph Rabalais, I. moved to Avoyelles.

The earliest record of Jean Baptiste Rabalais, I. is September 1784. It
should be noted that the baptism of his second child, Suzanne Rabalais is
recorded at the Opleousas church in December 1781. This baptismal record
is not necessarily the place of the ceremony. Early missionaries
traveled great distances to serve their parishioners and the records were
posted at the home of the missionary as well as the baptized.

It is possible to determine from land records that Jean Baptiste
Rabalais, I. lived near his father and that he acquired about 333 acres
of land from his father in 1788.

Jean Baptiste Rabalais, I. was active in the affairs of Avoyelles Parish
and his name appears frequently in official documents of the time. The
sons of Jean Baptiste Rabalais, I. and Marie Louise Bouchard, were Jean
Baptiste Rabalais, II., Paulin Rabalais, and Martin Rabalais who were
among the early settlers of the Bayou des Glaises area. Jean Baptiste
Rabalais, II. farmed about 333 acres at the junction of Bayou Rouge and
Bayou des Glaises. His brother, Paulin Rabalais, lived farther
downstream on Bayou des Glaises at what is now known as Joffrion's Lane.
Martin Rabalais had a home about one mile further downstream.
