Notes for Pierre DUCOTE, II

According to Nelson Gremillion's research, the Ducote name is peculiar to
Avoyelles. Probably all Ducote's outside of Avoyelles Parish can trace
their family lines back to Pierre Ducote, II. and Henrietta Rabalais in
Avoyelles Parish, LA.

He was baptized Sep 7, 1753 at St. Francis Catholic Church, Pointe Coupee
Post, LA. It was reported that he could not read nor write; but, he
could sign his name.

Pierre Ducote, II. and Henrietta Rabalais are know to have been in
Avoyelles as early as 1783. It is assumed that their move from Pointe
Coupee to Avoyelles occurred at the time or shortly after the move of
Joseph Rabalais, I and his family. Pierre Ducote, II. was a carpenter, a
trade quite useful in Colonial Avoyelles. Carpenters were scarce because
of numerous families who moved to Avoyelles from Pointe Coupee after the
severe flood of about 1780.
