Notes for George Brewer HAPPOLDT

The Happoldt family was prominent in Charleston, SC in the 1800's. There
are guns manufactured by them in the Charleston Museum, "America's First
Museum". Several guns in the museum that are presently on display were
manufactured by the Happoldts. They were contributed to the museum by
Mr. Petigru who bought them from J. H. Happoldt. They are: Percussion
Pistol dated circa 1826 by J. M. Happoldt, probably John Michael
Happoldt; another is a Swiss Style Target Rifle made in 1850 by J. H.
Happoldt; and a Flint-Lock Musket Circa 1825 which was purchased in 1892
from J. H. Happoldt. This last one may have been an import, and not
manufactured by him.

George Brewer Happoldt died in 1874 as a result of a drowning accident in
Maryland where he had come to escape the Civil War.
