LILLA (ARD) COX
OBITUARY
Mrs. Lilla Parena (Ard) Cox, wife of Melon V. Cox, Sr., a prominent
citizen of Hemingway, died Friday night at her home following a prolonged
illness.
Funeral services will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday from the Old
Johnsonville Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Julius Clark, a
former pastor, the Rev. Charles Moore, pastor of the Hemingway Methodist
Circuit and the Rev. Paul Holland, pastor of the Hemingway Southern
Methodist Church. Burial, directed by the Morris Funeral Home will
follow in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, David Cox, Reed C. Tanner, Jr., Robert F.
Tanner, Vance Nesmith, W. T. Nesmith, Jr., C. D. Huggins, Jr., Harry V.
Huggins, and Thomas B. Huggins.
Mrs. Cox was a daughter of the late William James Ard, Sr. and Parena
Triszvan (Owens) Ard of the Ard's Crossroads in the Old Johnsonville
Community. She was born December 19, 1879. She was a lifelong member of
the Old Johnsonville Methodist Church and active in all phases of
community life.
Surviving, besides her husband are: six daughters, Mrs. Charlie (Rena)
Huggins, Mrs. Hill (Iva) Northington, Mrs. Reed C. (Corrine) Tanner, all
of Kingstree, Mrs. Willard (Pearl) Nesmith of Nesmith, Miss Miriam Cox
and Mrs. Peggy C. Wimberly, both of Hemingway; two sons, J. Articus Cox,
Sr. and Richard L. Cox, both of Hemingway; and 23 grandchildren and 36
great grandchildren.
