Notes for Pierre LABORDE, I


Dr. Pierre LaBorde I., M. D., was the "Master Naval Surgeon" at Pointe
Coupee Post (Located at the site of New Roads, LA). He may have lived at
Opelousas before coming to Pointe Coupee and then Avoyelles Post in
Marksville, Louisiana. Besides his duties as Coroner, he served in a
capacity such as Notary Public in the Avoyelles Parish legal system. He
had farming interests as well as stock raising in the Avoyelles Parish
area. He was a native of Tartas, France and was the youngest of six
children.

He was also the first doctor to come to Avoyelles Parish. He moved his
family to Avoyelles Parish before the birth of his daughter, Madeleine
LaBorde on January 15, 1789. He was not listed in the Avoyelles Parish
Census of May 23, 1785. He was known to be alive as late as June 4, 1800
at which time he signed the declaration of a receipt; but, he was not
listed in the 1820 Census.

LEGAL CASES INVOLVING PIERRE LABORDE

In the Avoyelles Parish Courthouse are some citations of legal cases
involving Pierre LaBorde, I., M. D. He was frequently involved with the
legal system of his time, sometimes as an ombudsman, plaintiff, and
defendant.

1. He served in the capacity similar to that of a Notary Public in
which he assisted citizens with legal documents, witnessed papers, and
generally assisted people with legal problems. This was documented in
"History of Avoyelles Parish" by Corinne L. Saucier, page 18. In this
reference it was stated that, "... there were always two witnesses to
sign every legal paper, called 'temoins d'assistance.' Those who
performed this most often were Marc Eliche'; Francois Tournier, who later
became justice of the peace; Pierre Leglise; Baptiste Guillory; Jean
Bontant; Daniel Gaspard; Clause Nicolas; Jean Lacombe; Pierre Laborde;
Cyprien Lacour; and Antoine Lacheney. These men served as arbiters also."

Av1795-209, April 28, 1795: Copy of a guarantee by Poydras in favor of
Heberard and deferment of the act by LaBorde with his certificate.

Av1796-245, June 3, 1796: Certificate by Laborde, surgeon, on the death
of Hypolite Milan.

Av1800-371, June 4, 1800: Declaration of receipt signed by Pierre
LaBorde.

2. He sued for collection of payment for debts owed to him.

Av1792-60, October 29, 1792: Petition of James Macanulty against Laborde
for a statement of debts owed by the petitioner.

Av1793-96, March 5, 1793: Decree in favor of Laborde concerning a debt.

Av 1794-186, Oct 15, 1794: Petition of Pierre Laborde, surgeon, against
Dubroc for collection of a debt.

3. He was sued for collection of debts he owed.

Av1799-344, August 26, 1799: Petition of Evan Baker against Pierre
Laborde and Antoine La Chenay for payment of a debt.

4. He was sued for assault and battery in at least two cases, one
case where it was reported that he attacked a man with his walking cane
and caused him to fall down to the street.

Av 1793-101, April 2, 1793: Criminal suit between Jean Heberard and
Pierre Labord, concerning an attack made by Laborde on Haberard.

Av1793-102, April 3, 1793: Criminal suit between Jean Villard and Pierre
Labord, concerning an attack made by Labord on Villard.
