Notes for William James MCEADDY, SR


WILLIAM JAMES McEADDY, SR.

William James Eaddy, Sr. adopted the name of McEaddy. He had already
done so when his father made his will in November, 1850. This family
migrated to Florida.

In his will of Nov 7, 1850, recorded in the Will Book D, pp. 56-58,
Williamsburg. Henry Eaddy left each of his children large tracts of
land, $6,000, and seven slaves each. He named children Henry Eddison
Eaddy, William McEaddy, Mary Eaddy, Thomas Eaddy, Ezra Eaddy, "my
daughter Elizabeth Timmons," and "my daughter Emily Harrell." Executors
were his sons Thomas, John D., Ezra, and Henry Eddison; Witnesses were
William H. Johnson, John Hanna, I. H. Johnson, and W. C. Thompson.

William James McEaddy, Sr. moved to Florida from South Carolina, during
the 1850's. He was a surveyor by occupation. He laid out the town of
Ocala and settled in Sumter County, later to become Lake County. He
acquired considerable land holdings which he planted in citrus groves.
He participated in the founding and naming the little town of Yalaha.
During the Civil War, he served as a lieutenant under General J. J.
Dickinson in Co. H., Second Florida Cavalry.
