Notes for Elizabeth Capers WADDELL

ELIZABETH CAPERS WADDELL

Elizabeth (Waddell) Eaddy was the daughter of Rev. G. H. Waddell and
Carrie Lee Boulware of Newberry, South Carolina. Rev. Waddell attended
Piedmont Institute and later Adger College. He did not graduate from
Adger College; but, he was licensed to preach at the session of the South
Carolina Conference held in December of that year. He was eventually
elected Superintendent of the Epworth Orphanage. Success came to Rev.
Waddell in each of his appointments; but, perhaps his greatest
achievement of was enjoyed at the Epworth Orphanage. South Carolina
Methodism is indebted to him for this outstanding institution.

Elizabeth (Waddell) Eaddy was a graduate of Columbia College and began
her teaching career in local schools near Hemingway. After marriage to
Ulmer St. Clair Eaddy, I., she combined teaching with motherhood. After
her children were grown, she joined the Hemingway High School faculty.
Her presence brought something very special to the young people of this
area. She gave in great measure love and instilled respect for knowledge
and mental toughness in her expectations for pupil achievement. Her
knowledge of adolescent psychology made her a guidance counselor before
this profession became vogue.

Her primary subjects were mathematics and Latin. She worked
enthusiastically to help students succeed in collegiate instruction. She
expected students to achieve, and the students responded. She made Latin
come alive from the dead. Students flocked to her as a tutor and her
home was a haven for teenagers with problems, as well as for teenagers
who were serious about preparing for college. She became an institution
and was a legend in her lifetime. Along with academics, she taught
character and integrity, intellectual vigor, and service.

Elizabeth (Waddell) Eaddy received the Teacher-of-the-Year Award in
Williamsburg County from the Federation of Women's Clubs.
